The Falkirk Wheel

This bridge, which is an engineering marvel whose name has not been heard much, was designed to connect two channels with a difference in elevation. The Forth and Clyde canals are below the Union canal. The connection of these channels has emerged with the perfect harmony of civil engineering and mechanical engineering. In this structure, which is among the most important works of canal transportation, the ship enters from the bottom and reaches the area in the upper section with the rotation of the structure and continues on its way.

The lifting capacity is 600 tons and the lifting time is 15 minutes. Its cost is known as 4.5 million pounds. The structure resembling a spinning wheel is located in Scotland. It is known as a boat lift rather than a bridge. It was produced piece by piece in steel producing workshops and shipped to the construction site with 35 transport vehicles. The upper parts of the structure are constructed with prestressed concrete. Approximately 1200 tons of steel was used in its construction. 15 thousand bolts are matched with 45 thousand bolt holes. Each bolt is hand tightened. The pools of the building are filled with 500 thousand liters of water. It performs the return of the building with 1.5kWh energy.
