Renewable Energy Production in Turkey: Target for 2030

SHURA Energy Center, established on May 9, 2018, aims to contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy sector in Turkey.. SHURA supports discussions on energy efficiency and the creation of a renewable energy system based on current analysis and the most up-to-date data.. Established by the European Climate Foundation (ECF), Agora Energiewende and Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center (IPC), SHURA has recently published the report titled “Turkey’s Optimum Electricity Generation Capacity Towards 2030”. The report includes predictions about renewable energy production in Turkey.

Targets for Renewable Energy Production in Turkey for 2030

According to the information given in the report, Turkey’s electrical power capacity will reach 91,000 MW by the end of 2019. has reached. The share of renewable energy sources in this capacity is around 44,000 MW.. When evaluated in terms of electricity generation, 2019 has been a very productive year in terms of renewable energy generation.. The amount of water in the dams, solar and wind energy; The share of renewable energy in total energy production reached a level of 44%, breaking a record.. But we can also say that the main reason for this is the extraordinary increase in the amount of water in the dams.. Hydro capacity factor with dam was 36% in 2019. The fact that the hydro capacity factor with dams is 27-28% in an average year shows that more investments should be made in wind and solar energy in order to maintain this renewable energy rate in 2019 in the coming years.

In this context, the report mentions five different scenarios. In all scenarios, the share of wind and solar energy production is expected to increase from 10% in 2019 to around 24% to 30% in 2030.. This direct incentive to renewable energy sources will reduce carbon emissions and create a diverse energy production system.. Many countries are turning to renewable energy sources such as solar energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, which will minimize foreign dependency.. If the energy generation strategy in this area goes as planned, carbon emissions will be greatly reduced in the 2030 target, with the increase in the total share of wind and sun in terms of energy production in Turkey.

So, Energy Generation from Solar and Wind. How It Happens?

A radiant energy is released during the conversion of hydrogen gas into helium (fusion) in the core of the sun.. This radiant energy is called solar energy.. Even a small fraction of solar energy reaching Earth is far above the current current energy consumption of humanity. First of all, heat is obtained from solar energy.. This heat can be used directly as well as for electricity generation.. The method of obtaining electricity from solar energy is realized with solar panel systems.. Solar panels are placed in areas that are most exposed to sunlight.. Photons coming to these panels are converted into electrical energy by the panels and used.

Wind energy is obtained by wind turbines installed in suitable areas.. After the system starts to work, the propellers start to rotate when the wind speed rises to the appropriate level.. With this rotational movement, kinetic energy is released.. This energy is converted into electrical energy thanks to special systems.

Although solar energy has the capacity to meet the energy needs of the whole world, it is difficult to use this energy so widely due to technical, economic and institutional factors, but it is still seen that Turkey’s potential is high.. In the field of wind energy, Turkey draws attention with the increasing number of turbines and investments every year.. It is expected that Turkey will be in a position to meet a large part of its energy needs from renewable energy sources in the coming years, provided that this is done and new targets are achieved.
