Researchers working at Aegean University discovered two new species in the Cheeselikönü Cave, which is located in Mersin Anamur and has a depth of 1,429 meters.. It is stated that the creatures discovered are one centimeter long and distant relatives of shrimps.
Ege University Faculty of Fisheries Inland Water Biology Department Lecturer Prof.. Dr.. Murat Özbek and his delegation carried out work in the 1429-meter-high Cheeselikönü Cave, which is considered the deepest cave in Turkey, in the Anamur district of Mersin.. It turned out that the creature, which is stated to be a distant relative of the shrimp, has never been seen before. The new species was named “egmao”, which consists of the initials of Mehmet Ali Özel, who lost his life in a flood while working in another scientific research in the Cheeselikönü Cave in 2001, and Evren Günay, who lost his life as a result of a traffic accident while working in the same team.

Professor who defined and named the living species “Gammarus egmao”. Dr.. Murat Özbek also worked on the living specimens they collected in the Pınarpazarı region of Isparta. He named it “Derya”.
The creatures “Gammarus egmao” and “Gammarus Deryae” were announced to the world in 2018 and 2019 with scientific articles in international journals.
